Owner Denelle Curry, has always been guided by a piece of wise advice her father, Larry, shared with her at a young age: “Find what you love and make a business out of it.” Denelle found her passion in dogs, and she’s built a business around that love – a business that cares deeply for the beloved dogs in our care, their families, and the dedicated team that helps make it all possible.
Denelle’s journey began long before Kamp Kanine was born. Fresh out of UCSD with a degree in Sociology, Denelle was balancing two jobs, as an assistant dog trainer, and gaining experience as a veterinary technician. She was also busy raising her two dogs, Pac-Man and Kronk. Her love for dogs ran deep, and in 2008, when cage-free daycare and socialization was still a novel concept in the area, Denelle started helping her friend Jenny with a fledgling dog daycare business – Kamp Kanine. Whether it was assisting in the dog yards, painting fences, or driving vans, Denelle was right there, learning and growing.
By 2011, Denelle was officially running her own dog training business, and when Jenny sold her share of Kamp Kanine to Denelle, it was the beginning of a new chapter. In 2017, Denelle took full ownership and continued to nurture her passion for dog training while the on-site operations manager was retained for Kamp Kanine’s daily operations.
Turning Challenges Into Opportunities
Like many businesses, Kamp Kanine faced significant challenges when the COVID-19 pandemic struck. With restrictions in place, services like dog hiking and van pick-ups were halted, but the dog daycare remained an essential service. As the pandemic wore on, Kamp Kanine shrank by 40% and was in need of a new direction. Denelle and husband Gian, recognized that this was a chance to reimagine and improve.
In 2021, even amidst the pandemic, Kamp Kanine thrived. Gian focused on reworking internal processes, improving our social media presence, reducing employee turnover, and ensuring our services met the evolving needs of our clients. The company was transformed – not just in how we operated but in the culture we fostered.
In 2022, for about 20 months we faced another challenge when we temporarily lost 40%-80% of our leased space during different phases of a construction project. But we saw it as another opportunity to get better. Denelle and husband Gian focused on enhancing the quality of our daycare experience, perfecting the little details that set us apart.
